Satellite Imagery

Lloyd's Register - Fairplay continues to develop its close relationship with GeoEye to bring the worlds biggest collection of geospatial satellite photography to the maritime industry in general and to Lloyd's Register - Fairplay clients in particular. GeoEye was formed in January 2006 whenOrbimage acquired Space Imaging Inc., to form the worlds largest commercial satellite imaging company.

GeoEye are now able to bring satellite photography and radar images from a constellation of five satellites offering resolution levels of up to 1m per pixel. By Spring 2007 the resolution level should increase to 0.4m per pixel with the launch of a new satellite.

The satellite images can be used for a wide variety of functions within the maritime environment serving the needs of a large cross section of organisations. These include port and harbour authorities, dredging and port developers, hydrographers, governments and vessel and coastal management organisations, as well as shipping operators.

• Traffic density or traffic movement analysis for port and harbour authorities and vessel traffic managers
• The determination of changes to bathymetry for water depths up to 20m to correct charts, to analyse coastal erosion and quickly assess effects after natural disasters
• The comparison of existing port and harbour facilities against proposed new developments and dredging requirements
• The production of moving map display sytems, and backgrounds for ship simulation as well as full fly through simulation
• Promotional and exhibition representation of ports and geographic regions
